BUILDING THE FUTURE OF
CENTENNIAL HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETICS
ABOUT JR KNIGHTS VOLLEYBALL
Jr. Knights volleyball was created to build the future of the Centennial High School volleyball program. It includes players who are brand new to volleyball as well as those who are more experienced.
Open to 6th-8th grade girls, Jr. Knights volleyball will again offer two teams. Both teams will have approximately 12 players. The 2021 Jr. Knights season runs from August through September, and will meet approximately two weeknights each week for games or practices and includes 1-2 Saturday tournaments. Teams will play other local feeder program teams and some private school programs. Players are expected to attend practices and games.
Note: To participate, students must be zoned for/attend Centennial High School cluster schools.
ABOUT THE JR KNIGHTS COACHES
Jr. Knight's Coach Laura Winkler discovered her passion for volleyball in high school - and kept right on playing year-round for the next 25+ years! Her playing experience includes both indoor and outdoor, women's and coed and even beach! An outside hitter, Coach Laura played on a Women's 6 indoor team that played at USAV Open Nationals for 7 years. That's quite an accomplishment! Her family - including her husband, three children and a cocker spaniel named "Smalls" - moved from the Chicago, Illinois area to Roswell in the summer of 2018. Coach Laura's daughter is also a volleyball player on the Centennial JV team. "I'm thrilled to be part of the Jr. Knights Volleyball family and excited for the opportunity to share my experience and love for this game," said Coach Laura
Growing up overseas, Doug started playing organized volleyball in high school on an all boys team that played in a regional men's league in Germany that provided plenty of competition. Honing his skills as a setter, Doug earned the starting spot on the varsity team at the beginning of his junior year. After coming back to the US for college, Doug was instrumental in organizing a men's college club team, where he served as both player and coach. He continued to play all four years during college, often playing different positions depending on team needs. While in grad school, he played club volleyball both at the University of Tennessee Space Institute and at Georgia Tech.
Doug also played on a coed team that was successful in winning the Atlanta Club Sport Championships several times. It was on this Atlanta team where he first met Susan, who is now his lovely wife. Doug and Susan have three children. Most recently, Doug has really enjoyed coaching the Centennial Jr. Knights for the past two years, where he has seen several players develop a real passion for the sport. He is excited to continue working with young players to help them develop fundamental skills and progress in the game.
